Starting a Drone Cleaning Business: What to Know
This page is for people thinking about running a drone cleaning business. It covers rules, insurance, equipment, and pricing approaches. Nobody can promise what a business will earn, and we don't try to.

FAA certification
Flying a small drone (under 55 pounds) for business requires an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate under Part 107. Lucid Bots' Sherpa manual states the same requirement for commercial use of its cleaning drone in the US. Heavier aircraft and some operations need other FAA authorizations.
If you plan to spray solutions meant to kill or control algae, moss, mold, or weeds, read 14 CFR 137.3 and ask the FAA whether Part 137 applies to your operation. Customers will ask you for your certifications.
Insurance
Lucid Bots requires its customers to carry at least $1 million commercial general liability and $1 million aviation insurance, and its blog recommends $1 million per occurrence / $2 million aggregate general liability, aviation and hull coverage, and workers' comp that explicitly covers aviation work. Talk to an insurance broker who writes drone policies.
Equipment
Cleaning drones are usually tethered to a ground pump and water supply. Lucid Bots' Sherpa is one widely used model; operators such as Exterior Drone Washing and Vista Drone Cleaning say they fly it. You will also need pumps, hoses, water treatment if you rinse with purified water, and transport. Get current pricing directly from manufacturers.
Pricing approaches
Lucid Bots' operator blog says most operators price drone exterior cleaning at $0.25 to $0.45 per sq ft and adjust for market, surface, and complexity. Some operators publish lower commercial glass rates, for example $0.12 to $0.25 per sq ft (Exterior Drone Washing, Vista Drone Cleaning). Rates in your market may differ.
Local rules
- Business license and registration in your city and state.
- Wash-water and runoff rules, which vary by city.
- Property access, airspace near airports, and temporary flight restrictions.
